Reflecting on Five Years of Mode Pilates: A Journey of Growth, Resilience, and Community

For those unfamiliar with our backstory, Mode Pilates (formerly Sculpt Barre & Fitness) was founded by me, Laura Bullock, wife, mother of 2 boys, and passionate advocate for modern Pilates and a functional approach to barre.

The journey began in June 2019 when I noticed a real gap in the way Pilates was offered on the Northern Beaches, particularly in Manly. I envisioned a space where workouts were not only effective but would also feel good—a studio interior that was stylish yet functional, offering a sanctuary-like space to workout with uplifting music instead of mainstream pop on repeat. Existing options felt outdated, offering classical Pilates that lacked the creativity and flow I craved in my daily practice.

We signed the lease for our first 62 sqm studio at 169 Pittwater Road, Manly, and opened our doors to what soon became a second home for many. Within a year, we had outgrown this space, moving to Whistler Street, where we spent four years before securing our ultimate waterfront location on West Esplanade—a dream come true.

The past five years have been a journey marked by significant milestones and challenges. Launching and expanding B2C businesses demands resilience, especially amidst the disruptive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced us to close for nearly a year. Additionally, navigating the escalating costs of business operations, alongside the rise in living expenses for our clients, has presented its challenges. Coupled with the proliferation of Pilates franchises popping up everywhere (not to mention the influx of virtual, low-quality offerings—don’t get me started!), these hurdles have tested our dedication and grit. Nonetheless, we proudly opened three distinctive dual studios in Manly, Brookvale, and Mosman—each holding a special place in my heart.

To our clients, our friends—you mean the world to us. Thank you for making Mode your Pilates home. I consider you family. Your loyalty has cultivated a vibrant community that inspires us daily. A special thank you to those who have been with me since the very beginning. It blows my mind how lucky we are to have you with us month after month, year after year.

Now, to the Mode team: A huge thank you to Rhiannon, Nia, and Jess. There’s never a dull moment, and I appreciate your patience with my sleep-deprived brain. I adore you girls.

To our instructors, I genuinely believe we have the best team in the industry. Thank you for your passion and dedication. You light up our clients’ days, and I couldn’t ask for better friends and colleagues.

And to Mode, I will never tire of you. You just keep getting better year after year. We will never sit back and blend in with the crowd. We will continue to reinvest in our spaces and our people, striving to stay on point and one step ahead. The question is... Where to next?

Here’s to five amazing years and many more ahead! Let’s continue to grow, inspire, and support one another. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

I love you all.
